The Refectory of the Dominican Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Our Lady of Mercy), in Milan, keeps one of the most famous painting in the whole world: the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. Executed on the Northern wall of the great hall between 1494 and 1498, during the rule of Ludovic the Moor.It was made by “a secco” (dry-painted) instead of the technique “in fresco” which was generally used for the wall paintings of that time. Although the theme of the Cenacolo (the Last Supper) was traditional in refectories, Leonardo’s is presented in an absolutely innovative form, not only for the radical alteration of the structure of the scene, but also for the impressive realism used in relating the evangelical episode. |
